Chiropractic

What is Chiropractic

The modern lifestyle, long hours of work in front of a computer, insufficient or nonexistent physical exercise, and stress place strain on the spinal column and the muscles that support it, resulting in the gradual appearance of musculoskeletal problems.

Chiropractic is a system of treatment that focuses on the spine and other joints of the body and on their connection with the nervous system. The chiropractor uses manipulations (adjustments) to restore the vertebral segments to their normal position and may then apply therapeutic or ergonomic exercise.

How is it performed and how many sessions are required?

Chiropractors diagnose and treat spinal disorders that cause musculoskeletal or neuropathic pain. Taking a detailed medical history is the first step toward an accurate diagnosis. Then, during the clinical examination, the spine is palpated carefully to analyze joint movement and identify problems. Additional simple X-rays or other imaging tests (e.g., CT scan) may be requested to confirm the diagnosis.

During a chiropractic session, you lie on a specially designed chiropractic table. The chiropractor places you in a specific position depending on the area to be treated and applies a quick, controlled, painless thrust to the joint, beyond its usual range of movement, which typically produces a sound—the characteristic “crack.”

In some cases, massage or other techniques are required to prepare the area before the adjustment.

There is no predetermined number of visits for treatment. The number and frequency of sessions depend on the patient, their progress, the condition being treated, and other factors. However, most people achieve maximum improvement in six to ten sessions.

How safe is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is safe when performed by someone trained and authorized to provide chiropractic care. Chiropractic studies are university-level, at least 5 years in duration, offered at schools recognized by the European Council on Chiropractic Education, and require one year of practical training after completion of studies.

Chiropractic rarely causes discomfort. Some patients may experience mild soreness or pain after a session, which usually subsides within 12 to 48 hours. Very rarely, complications may occur, such as causing or worsening a preexisting disc herniation or a stroke.

Contraindications

If you suffer from osteoporosis, inflammatory arthritis, spinal cord compression, metabolic diseases, or cancer of the spine, chiropractic is not suitable for you. Additionally, if you have a history of cancer, you must first consult your treating physician before visiting a chiropractor.
